Greetings to all,
I acquired an EAC R390A a couple of years ago that had been lurking under a ham radio operator bench for 30+ years. After a good cleaning and brown beauties replacement in the IF and RF deck, the set was alive and well again. A few months ago an intermittent problem was noticed in the AGC with overload observed in strong stations at the med AGC position. Placing the AGC on slow and returning back to med produced the usual silence followed by a normal AGC function. It worked ok for a few days and then the problem came back. At this point I decided to replace C551. It had some leakage. The problem disappeared but came back. Finally I have replaced all caps in the IF deck related to the AGC but the problem now is even worse. Now, as I go back from slow to med AGC the silent period is just momentary. Having reached this point I decided to consult the combined wisdom of this list for opinions and recommendations that will be appreciated.
I am not new to the list and have been here for many years even after having to sell the 4 R390s that I had in the 90s and losing a fifth to a long term loan. Only my trusty R392 remained. It was almost a miracle to find this R390A locally and it’s for keeps.
