The problem is if you really, really want your HP 3586B stable and accurate then one must use something like a HP 33XX sythesizer for the 2 nd (?) osc that is xtal controlled for the selection of LSB and USB as it isn't phase locked as the other internal oscillators are.
I know picky, picky, picky.  Buth that's what might be needed on the new digital modes.
I have seven.  I think I might need ECT.
BTW the article in QST about the new digital bands stated that "a low noise receiver is vey helpful" IIRC.
