Sounds like the perfect receiver for today's digital modes to me - looks like we've come full circle!

Fellows,
Way back yonder Wei-Li included history and details of muchbusiness things in his compiled Pearls of Wisdom. The Y2K manual is the in handmaintenance manual. When I read that you are listening to an R-390/URR or evenmore so an R-390A/URR I ask that nature not include your soul in any upcomingground plans. May good ESD protocols be with all your days.

Here are several sources for information on the legendaryCollins/US Army joint design R-390A/URR as well as the Collins R-390/URR radioreceiver. Please note that they are NOT the same. http://www.r-390a.net/ ThisWeb site is the ultimate resource for information for the R-390A. It haseverything you ever wanted to know about the R390A. Kudos to Al, WA0HQQ, forall his work compiling this outstanding reference source. I am proud to belisted as a contributor. MisterMike, W1RC
The history line suggests the Collins R-390/URR was to be aninterface transform and selective frequency filter needed to match the impedancebetween an antenna and a teletype demodulator in an HF teletype receivingsystem. Internal circuits and front panel meters enabled visual tuningindication far superior to just an audio output signal level. Listening to a CollinsR-390/URR as if it were a Vintage Zenith Transoceanic, shortwave Radio wasnever part of the design requirements. That is why there is a 455 KHz output onthe rear panel. Detect the signal your way and amplifier it your way. Get outof the box and leave it alone.
The Collins (and other corporations) RF engineers knew the coretuned oscillators and the selectivity of the RF deck were the product Collinswas the first to offer in the market place. The other usual features of the Armstrongsuper heterodyne receiver were included in the test instrument packaging. Itlooks like a receiver to us. You know a Picasso when you see one. You know aCollins when you see one. Furthermore, you have learned to distinguish the subtledifferences in products produced in house, and products produced by outsource franchisecontractors. (Helena-Rubinstein) Collins wanted SSB the first demo stuff was not stableand the feature was dropped. The entire band pass of the audio deck was tocut off as much out of TTY tone band pass noise as reasonable to present the teletypedemodulator the best input possible for good clean text copy.
OMG a ditty receiver. Yes, and you tailor the keyed tone youcopy with headsets to your audio satisfaction with some left hand synthesizercontrols. The Army and Navy long haul logistics communications had nouse for voice or manual Morris. Voice is tactical application. United States Military logistics was via teletype. Over wire since1914 and wireless since 1918. Utilizing a Collins R-390/URR for human audio wasnot a military activity.
You need an app for that. It bolts in the rack either under orover the R-390/URR. It draws power from its leash. Connecting a short interconnectdongle cable from the R-390/URR to the app completes the installation of theapp. A reboot is not required. From day one American Tax Payers were not goingto have the military setting around all day listening to talk radio.
Respectfully,
Roger Ruszkowski
