[R-390] Interesting find on a R-390 online

Had a friend I met at the company I work for...some 20+ years ago. He’s retired now. Was a CW intercept operator that told me he flew all over the jungle snooping out signals using an R-390 series receiver. Told me of kicking them out of the aircraft into the jungle at the end when we exited Vietnam.
I’ve also heard stories of them being dumped overboard at sea off of navy vessels.
I think that was standard practice when upgrades were made during deployment. I guess the new radios were loaded along with supplies and upgraded while underway as opposed to a scheduled refit while in port.

I cringed to read that when they abandoned a listening post in Cambodia at the end of the war they "stripped the place to the walls, leaving only 100 obsolete R-390 receivers". Ouch!
