[R-390] R-390 Power Cord

Has anyone successfully modified the power cable available from Surplus Sales of Nebraska to use on the R-390? I was under the assumption that all that was needed was to mechanically modify the plug to mate with the radio connector.  I was able to file down and drill out the plug to have it mate snugly with the connector, but I didn't realize the way it is wired is incompatible. If it has to be re-wired, it looks like a special tool is needed to to unscrew  the plug from the shell? Any hope for this cable or did I just spend some money on another educational experience?
