Hi Chuck, Do you have another rx with a signal level meter that will tune 17mc? If yes, couple the 390A 1st mixer cathode(7) to its antenna through a 100k res and see if you get a signal. If not, wiggle the crystal in its socket a little. Or, check the output of the osc directly on its plate (you might want to add a small cap to the 100k res). Also make sure mixer cathode circuit is in tact. If not, wiggle J221 a lot. And, check for voltage on osc screen.
Kind of difficult without a scope and sig gen. Good luck.
Regards, Larry

Subject: [R-390] Below 8Mc
Hello all.
Trying to get this 390a to work below 8 Mhz.
I had a bad cap across the 1st osc coil and replaced it with a mica. I
had a disconnected wire to J-221, a bad 1st osc tube, two brown beauties
that doubled in value, 2 open resistors and a broken tuning slug. I have
3 volts across T207 when it is tuned.
Any other common part failures in this area? I cant believe there is
more I have to fix here! Basically I only have a tube tester, a Simpson
260 and a Fluke multi-meter. -Chuck
