This is what was said about the 1960 EAC early run contract by the former
Director of Radio for the Signal Corps at Fort Monmouth.
" Also about this time we got a bad run of R-390A's from Electronic Assistance in Red Bank that nobody wanted to get stuck with. These turned out to be receivers that they had rebuilt from surplus. Tom Howard of Alltronics Howard in Boston put us on to this when he wanted to get a contract like EAC to rebuild receivers. He had supplied over 300 junkers to EAC ".
" All of the Clevite ceramic filters were to have been replaced with mechnical filters when they were scheduled for depot maintenance ".

The hamfest article implies that the photos are for a radio "like" the one
being auctioned off, I doubt that it is the same radio. The other clue was
"one of these".
There were some factory-specials; I have the IF deck from one of those
(with factory original ceramic filters). I would expect that maybe the only
special R-390A's were those of original Collins vintage. When it became a
"winner take all" bid for mass production I doubt that the small suppliers
had anything to do with custom-engineering.
My super R-390A has the ceramic IF deck and the squelch facility (built the
squelch system myself from one of the articles).
