It started with the idea of precision oscillators. Think R-390A.
Crystal controlled, fully tracking, final IF variable (PTO). What
makes something like that work? Took 3 blue stripers and made one good
unit. Still have parts for one more. The WHY of how it worked
fascinated me.
Built the Sheara GPSDO when that was the only reasonable cheap
solution. The 5087A, a Thunderbolt and an NTP time server are
currently in the server rack. (looks much nicer now that I made the
right length cables for the switches/patch panels/stuff). Playing with
SDR these days, listening to the boatanchors (do it once, do it right,
few problems!!).
First program I wrote as an adult with a modern language (LabVIEW) was
to suck data out of a serial port from an M12+T, parse it and set the
clock.
