Actually much faster than that.

I've been told by a just-retired career EE and lab maven who *really* knows his materials and processes, that aluminum actually oxidizes within milliseconds upon being made really bare, as happens in abrasion or machining.  The first layer of oxidation is only a molecule or two thick, and we don’t normally see it.  Later, further oxidation that we can see is much deeper and thicker.  (I just trashed a two-penlight-cell Mag-Light flashlight because of totally corroded batteries.  I couldn’t even drill them out.)
