Hi, Gordon,
As you say, it's a normal straight spring. One loop at each end is bent ninety degrees to facilitate hooking the spring onto the pins.
Its purpose is simply to take play out of the KC CHANGE shaft connection to the PTO. Without the spring you'll notice erratic action when attempting to zero beat a signal with the BFO engaged.
While in there, check that the oldham coupler faces are correctly positioned -- there should be about a 1/64 inch gap between the oldham disc and coupling faces to permit the disc to compensate in case the coupling faces are slightly misaligned.
