I was looking for something unrelated last night and came across this 
guy who makes a gizmo to fake out the Meade telescope controller when 
the keypad goes bad.  He makes the PC board one-off on a CNC mill using 
a very fine endmill -  the SMT packages give you a good reference for 
the character size:
