me in my service work of R 390 series receivers.=20
Last Christmas my wife bought me a pair of DORKY looking reading glasses wi=
th LED's. She bought these from Walmart for about $10 and that included the=
4 required coin batteries. I used them for some of the micro-controller bo=
ard work that my business also does but recently when rebuilding an IF deck=
from a 390A, I tried them and WOW did that ever help.=20
My electronics lab is very well lighted and I have bench mounted lights on =
all of our benches with magni-viewers as well as florescent ceiling bulbs a=
bove every bench. The magni-viewers tend to get in the way for some jobs li=
ke digging DEEP into R390A IF modules.=20
You can buy a pair of these on ebay for under $5 and choose the diopter you=
desire from 1.0 to 3.0.=20
The pair from Walmart was 2.0 and these are perfect for me.
The LED's provide a lot of light, noticeable, even under 2) 4 foot long flo=
rescent bulbs over each of the 3) benches.
These are half height lenses that allow you to easily look over the lenses =
for normal viewing. If you are farsighted this will be frustrating but near=
sighted folks like me will benefit..

My pair uses CR1630 coin batteries and the pair on the provided link uses C=
R927. I bought 20 of the CR1630 cells for under $10 with free shipping. I d=
on't know if the 1630 and 927's are interchangeable. The fit is very tight =
in my pair. Here is a link for 26 of the CTR927's free shipping for about $=
5.

appy-/261234429504?pt=3DUS_Single_Use_Batteries&hash=3Ditem3cd2c90e40
Typically, I use mine about 1 to 2 hours each work day and they last with v=
ery bright light for 2 to 3 weeks.=20
I hope this will help others who do tedious work too.

And there is or was a detent setting plate at the front of the detent part =

the switch to prevent the shaft from going to that position if the squelch=

parts/system is not installed. There are one or two blank plates on the IF=

module if the mod is not installed.

There should be info in the manual for setting it.
There is a simplified way to set the gain if you don't have the signal gene=
rator=20
and/or whatever else is called for in the manual:
IF GAIN SETTING
Here is Chuck's procedure:
From: http://www.R390A.com/html/gain.html>
Text in brackets [ ... ] is mine (Roy, K1LKY)
*********************
Procedure to set R390A IF Gain:
Once the receiver has been fully mechanically and electrically aligned, th=
e=20
final procedure to perform before "buttoning it up" is to set the IF gain=
=20
control. [This means that you should have done the mechanical alignment - s=
et=20
the cams properly and so on.]
Many otherwise very sensitive R390A's are thought not to be due to weak si=
gnals=20
being covered by noise generated by excess IF deck gain.
Allow the receiver to warm up for at least 1 hour then:
1- Terminate the antenna input [This means unhook any antenna and put a 50=
ohm=20
resistor,or a 125 ohm resistor, on the balanced antenna input, no signals f=
rom=20
any antenna or signal generator.]
2- Set receiver for 15.2 mHz
3- Set the "FUNCTION" control to MGC
4- Select the 4kc filter with the "BANDWIDTH"
5- Set "RF GAIN" control to 10 or maximum [If your receiver goes whacko at=
this=20
point, reduce the IF gain setting as in step 9 till it behaves right.]
6- Peak the "ANTENNA TRIM" for maximum noise as indicated on the "LINE LEV=
EL"=20
meter [If you do not get a noticeable peak, your receivers front end and rf=
=20
amplifier stages are not working right.]
7- Set "Line Meter" switch to -10db scale [mknus 10 db]
8- Set "Line Gain" control to full CW or "10." [Local Audio gain 0 or low =
if=20
you are listening to it.]
9- Adjust IF gain control, R-519 to cause "Line Level" meter to indicate=
=20
between -4 to -7 VU.
10- Re-zero the carrier meter control, R-523
11- Set controls above for normal operation and reconnect antenna
