That is why I originally recommended grabbing it with the current 
clamp very close to the end to be welded, to avoid drawing the 
welding current through the length of the wire.  Of course, that 
would have required removing the copper cup from the end disk to 
provide access to the disk end of the wire, which would have entailed 
its own perils.  No free lunch.

An exciting and educational journey, in any case.
