Wowsers, Barry - that was a LONG time ago! I seem to recall Nolan adding a
quip about "calibrating" his night vision scope using a cat on a fencepost
as a reference around that time.
Don has always been very tolerant of allowing folks to wander a bit
off-topic through the years as the content is most always technically
interesting and either at least tangentially related to R-390s, military
service, or something many of us share as a gadget-related common interest.
We never spent a lot of time there, just the occasional stroll. Got to
shake Don's hand at Dayton in 2007, he's indeed every bit the gentleman and
all around good guy he seems here. Not to mention his extensive knowledge
of the R-389 and other-things-radio.
BTW, I still have my 450x Newtonian reflector aka the siege mortar, boxed
up since the move south. Was discussing it with the good wife a couple
nights back in reference to the Venus/Jupiter thing goin' on up thar. She
let me have the R-390/R-390A/SP-600 rack in the living room for an extended
period of time along with the Teledyne A and a big Atlas boom mic stand,
and a B40D is currently occupying part of her kitchen counter, so the
telescope shouldn't be an issue *fingers crossed*. I miss it!
