Roy,
The Beckman 905 WWV receiver is a very nice, modern
double-conversion design and suitable for conversion to SWL or Ham
usage. A quick comparison between the '905 and the HBR series,
reveals a foundation for homebrewing a decent receiver with a
modest amount of work (VFO, preselector, BFO).
The unusual audio filter circuitry can lend it self to a selectable
bandpass design using the Ed Wetherhold 88mH toroid filters. The
downside of the receiver is the great number of black/brown
beauties that need to be replaced before serious usage. I believe
there are 27 of these.
