Pete,

That looks more like bacon grease, or the residue from a grease fire, 
but I could be wrong. I've gotten a lot of radios with the same look 
that was grease from 1940s/50s era home cooking.

Try an open cup of bleach inside the bag. The smell should be gone in 
about an hour.
