Some list members have used a cheap microprocessor crystal here. The crystals are much smaller than the original HC-6 style, and have wire leads.  You could wrap and solder the relpacement crystal's leads to 2 larger diameter pieces of wire and plug those into the crystal socket.  Another approach is to gut the original crystal and then install the replacement inside the can.
