Hi Paul, Yes, I did use a diode to replace the ballast tube. It was one of those "temporary repairs" to keep the set working until I could get another ballast tube, but I forgot it was in there and it was about 20 years later that I remembered it and took it out. THE SET WAS STILL WORKING JUST FINE. Some on the list can give you mathematical reasons why it won't work, or will be "bad" for the set, but my experience was good. YMMV.

Has anyone tried keeping the 6BA6 PTO/BFO tubes intact and used a diode to replace the ballast tube ?
