Look at the "eco-idiots" and their "efforts" against the 
incandescent bulb (particularly out on the west coast)...   
They were so hell-bent to get rid of the "energy waster" 
design - they jumped right into bed with a "design from 
hell"  bulb  containing mercury and other not-so 
"eco-friendly" stuff.  Granted - tube florescent have 
mercury and "stuff" - BUT they are much more prevalent in 
commercial use where they are (or should be) handled and 
disposed of more carefully - and when you consider the vast 
difference in just sheer numbers between commercial use of 
tubes - and the home / consumer use of CFLs... and the 
impact of all that mercury hitting the land fills...    gads.

Japan is a wake-up call, folks.  Nothing wrong with 
technology *as long* as we deal with it intelligently rather 
than letting the "eco-idiots" and "bean counters" "set the 
standards" - and limit prudent maintenance at the alter of 
quick profit...
