Many of us started with a 324 (that was the first generator I owned) 
or a Heathkit SG-8, LG-1, or RF-1U (in my view, the Eicos were much 
better than the Heathkits, although the 324 had its own ... character).

I was lucky to find a General Radio 805-C in need of TLC not too long 
afterwards.  Now THAT was a boatanchor!  Over 100 pounds, IIRC.  It 
came to me along with a 1606-A RF bridge and a Millen grid-dip meter, 
and they all served me faithfully for a couple of decades.  I still 
have the Millen.
