[R-390] fractal antenna

Hi

Been reading up on fractal antenna theory. The hype is all about small size and wide bandwidth. Sounds too good to be true.

If I am correct, it seems to be best suited for UHF, and probably not for HF for our R390A's. I see them employed in cellphones and in HDTV amplified antenna plates. 

Am I in error? Has anyone built one for HF receiving? Found one article about one, but it looks like a YAGI to me.
