Timing.  I bought several for less than $100 each a year or so ago 
from a guy who had a pile of NIB ones on eBay.  They appeared to be 
selling well -- he upped the BIN price after a while.  I guess he 
must have run out.

I see there are a number of 8655As for sale, so they must not have 
been as rare as I remember them being.  But the asking prices are 
more than I'd pay for an 8640B.  So if you sell your 8654A and 8655A, 
you may well have enough to buy a nice 8640B.
