Perry: I can't resist...since you are arraigning your shop, what will it be charged with? Abuse of components? Theft of signals? Murder of the RF spectrum?
Sorry,
Dave WB4FUR

Subject: [R-390] Simple Green II Plus More
List,
Wrote: Even though it is pretty chilly outside I can do a radio cleaning inside with scalding hot water and simple green, a rinse with boiling hot distilled/ deionized water and then stick the radio on the porch railing to dry out for a day or so before giving it the 140 degree convection oven treatment in the kitchen.
Uh, boiling hot water may not be a good idea considering coil coating sand film capacitor construction.
At your farm you could save rainwater. Price is right.
I have had good luck using a hair dryer to blow water out of nooks and crevices. Using a 20 inch window fan to blow on the chassis overnight might be easier on the components that 140F oven.
Still for me to try: using a water pick with soap cleaning solvent to get into those nasty and maddening obscure places
Wrote: I am only working on individual modules right now, IF decks, audio decks and one really grungy RF deck so it is not as if I will be hefting an 80 pound radio from room to room.
Smart move. The stuff gets heavier as we get older.
Wrote: Your collection practically requires a factory assembly line to go through all of the gear you have collected. I hope you are working on your hybrid 390's with the non A IF decks.
I resemble that remark! It’s only 18 or so. Not got a chance to do my 725 project as I’ve been arraigning my shop so I can get my parts and work.
Wrote: Mostly I have been distracted by the restoration of a couple of Racal 6790's and a Watkins Johnson 8718A. I have to admit that the siren's song of how the 8718A sounds has been attempting to lure me into brand disloyalty.
Your salvation is at hand. See last remarks.
Wrote: there are no warm little filaments to heat up my radio room.
What, no local liquid shine to keep you warm?
Wrote: Maybe a point of clarification for those looking for the Simple Green Precision. The number that Perry listed, "D6-17487P" is actually a Boeing specification for the cleaner. The part number for a one gallon container is 13406 and a google search under "Simple Green" 13406 will yield many more hits on suppliers.
Thanks for the correction. Rechecking the container shows that the D6 number is the only one on the bottle. Morons. Red dot Indian customer service.
For my fellow heretics who joyfully want to wring the best out their A recovers. I have three articles which I edited.
First is a compilation of two ER articles titled A Competition Grade R 390A with additional comments.
Second is Cheaper and Simpler Upgrades for the R-390A HF Receiver from E. R. Magazine Aug 2004 by Chuck Felton, KD0ZS.
BA receiver audio sucks. The only exceptions were some of the very old Hallicrafters that had push pull audio outputs.
The third is an article that is a work in progress. It is IMHO an improvement on the Kleronomos audio circuit. It requires removing filter chokes from the AF deck and relocating them behind the power transformer, placing new filter capacitors with the power supply transformers. I have redrawn the AF schematics. It has not been tested.
I will email any or all to those who are interested.
Regards,
Perrier
