My first radio was a boat anchor that my father borrowed from one of his
friends. I was about 10. I do not know what the model was (~1967), but
it was not new and it was a general coverage communications reciever. It
was not a little toy. I listened to all of the powerhouses: HCJB, Radio
Moscow, AFRTS, VOA, Rado Netherlands, Radio Australia, Etc. I also
listened to some utility stations like the number stations and sometimes
to hams. After a couple of years his friend wanted his radio back and he
designed and made a regenerative reciever for me (1 tube -- triode/
pentode -- 6U8A). It was designed for about 5 - 15 MHz. I listened for
many hours and steadily improved my skill in news analysis. I especially
enjoyed Radio Moscow's mail bag program since they read and attempted to
answer their hate mail. As a late teen I finally was able to afford to
get a serious radio and bought an SP-600 at a thrift store. Great radio.
Later after I got my ticket (early 20's) I got an R390A that was dead on
one band, but a bit of work with a plastic alignment tool fixed that.
Later I got another one at a ham auction. It tunes, but the KHz tuning
knob does not activate the frequency display and I have not had the time
to pull it apart and find where the connection is not working. I also
have a few other radios, but have been rather busy lately and have not
been listening as much as I might like.
