Since its intervention was needed to stop the unpleasantness of 
1939-45.  Absent that, the US would likely still be a relatively 
sleepy federation of 180M people that mostly kept to itself -- in my 
personal view, an infinitely preferable state of affairs than the 
path to which destiny called it.  Oh, well.

However, it looks like that is coming to an end and China will get a 
turn next.  But oddly enough, they will be speaking English -- so old 
Blighty can have an ironic last laugh.
