Bob,

The basic idea of how they work is similar (mix IF signal to 50 kc and  
do sideband selection, BFO injection, and detection there), but the  
CV-591 has things the GSB-1 does not:

crystal mixer frequency control (and variable control)
USB/LSB pilot lights
stepper relay sideband switching
real military construction
remote BFO frequency control (Maybe USB/LSB change also)
multiple level output

The GSB-1 has a noise limiter that the CV-591 does not (or at least  
not a panel switch)

I have not compared the circuits side by side, though so I likely am  
missing some things.

If someone offers you a choice of either, take the CV-591.  (Send the  
GSB to me!)
