I appreciate the patience of the 390 folk for the bandwidth to allow
390/390A owners who also have R-388's to continue this discussion and take
advantage of this lists member's experience with this receiver.
The 51J-4 would be closer to being one of my favorites if I accomplished the
PD and AGC mods described in the Neidlinger link. Thanks to Don for passing
that info along.
If any R-388 / J-4 users have added the Collins 4:1 vernier, I would really
like to talk with you about the procedure. I have heard it is much more
difficult than the installation on an A-4 but since I have not done one.....
Anyway, comments are invited as that's another of the mods that would help.
Lastly, has anyone bothered to figure out a way to effectively "loosen" up
the J-4's mechanical filter lever switch? I dang near bust a finger every
time I switch filters. Since the PD, AGC, 4:1, and filter switch all
require moving the front panel around, it would be nice to kill *4* birds
with one stone. :D
Thanks and 73,
Chris

There are a bunch of us who have the R388/URR and the R388A/URR. I have and
R388/URR and it is my favorite receiver. I have it together in my rack with
my R390A/URR I hunt with the R388 and zero in with the R390A. . The R388
was a favorite with military personal in the early 1950's because it was a
general coverage receiver so they could sneak in listening to stations that
played the Billboard top 40 tunes."
