Quote: *"I want to listen and not have to work on radios again. I have my
collection and R-390's or R-390A's aren't in my crystal ball. I have found
over the years that you can repair the R-390/A receivers to perform
exceptionally, but they will always break down somehow. A Hammarlund SP-600
once re-capped, aligned and repaired will outlast the owner."*
Les,
I hear ya on that! I have some pieces of equipment where it is almost not
worth the bother to put the rack screws back in. I have not had to mess
around with my SP-600 for at least three years other than the tuning knob
sometimes slipping a little. The &%%$#& filter relays on the RF-350K's drive
me up the wall. When I press the BITE test I expect to see paSSed and not
some A1A5-1 message. I am "still" plagued with the very intermittent 2-3 MHz
bandswitch problem on the '390A that only appears when I bring the rack
screws near the radio.
The RF-590 is beginning to spoil me. I feel like I am cheating on my husband
with the R-390A sitting there and looking cuckold.
I had passed on a sweet deal for a collector quality R-390 (non A) at $600
just because I did not want to deal with the "death by heat" regulator setup
and a completely different box of clamps, spare modules and tubes.
