Ahh, the 1200A.  Featured in many college EE labs to this day.  Not 
exactly Krohn Hite's best effort, but it works OK.  Pity they didn't 
include log sweep.  The Leader LFG-1300S and LFG-1310 are similar 
units, also widely used in college EE labs.  The Leaders do have log sweep.

I'm sure Krohn Hite can give you the electrical specs of the 
pot.  Just e-mail them.  They can probably also sell you a new pot 
(maybe even something better than a Type J).

As to keeping things in production, if you have a design that does 
the job, a production facility that has experience making them, and 
customers who will buy them, why change just for fashion's sake?  I 
wish more US manufacturers understood this.  Maybe they could bring 
the production cost down (parts and labor), but remember that test 
equipment is a fairly small market, so the amortized design and 
manufacturing setup costs are a significant part of the total per-unit cost.
