Loose wire are not a good sign. You may or may not have problems in the 
antenna relay circuit, and it was just easier to clip the wires loose from the 
relay than to fix the real problem. 

The relay is de-energized when receiving signals. No need to add the relay 
coil field to the weak signals. In CAL. the signals should be shorted to 
ground. Dial up WWV and set the receiver to CAL. WWV should be lost to a cal 
tone.

AM broad cast does sound much better at 16KC than 2KC. Fidelity is not a 
R390/A strong selling point. There are things you can do to one receiver if 
you really are into short wave reception with the receiver.

You have a bit of work but that's just part of the hobby.
