Uh no.... at least not until it is 'up for sale/trade'. Until then it has
whatever value the current owner assigns to it and that could be measured by
any number of factors, not just monetarily.
What I think you might have meant is that the value of something, *at the
time of a pending sale/transfer*, is exactly what someone other than the
owner assigns to it. That 'someone' is usually the buyer.
Failure to recognize this rule of economics has been the downfall of many
and you were correct to point it out. (If anyone doubts this; well they
haven't been to the same hamfests I have been to wherein some vendors end up
valuing their wares too high and thereby transporting them back home.)
