Well, $3k was for a factory-new radio.  No amount of regrooving will 
give you a factory-new radio today.  At best, you get "shade-tree" 
new (and judging by the re-done radios I've seen, frankly, I'm not impressed).

Not necessarily.  Value is a function of both supply and demand, so 
if there is no demand there is no value, no matter how much expense 
went into producing the item in question.
