>In common use on the ham bands trading 599's with the DX is usually meaningless, and anything reported below S9 is usually subjective relative to band noise. I know this breaks the official standard but it's life. You could spend your whole ham career trying to report S meter readings by the official standards but that's honestly not too fun.

I've enjoyed it - calibrating S-meters has been one of the things I like
to do.
Its like the outside remote antenna tuner that I built for 80m. I can
honestly
claim SWR matches of 1.05:1. Not meaningful but lots of neat bragging
rights.
In the matter of '59' I remember getting into an AM pileup and after
many tries
getting the contact who then gave me a '59'. What can I say?
Cheers, Gord VE3EOS
