All other considerations aside, a LOT of work has been put into the

It's also worth bearing in mind that everything going in or out of 
Washington Island must come by boat (or air drop, I suppose ;-))   And, 
an interesting sidenote, the next island up the Door County peninsula is 
Rock Island, now entirely a state park where no vehicles (not even 
bicycles) are allowed.  Rock Island was once the site of a vacation 
retreat owned by prolific Chicago inventor and entrepreneur Chester 
Thordarson, a name we all recognize!
