We were po boys, we only had the single cans.  You could just squeeze 
a 6X5 probe into one can if you were careful.  If you had an EA53 
(the tube that HP used), you had to cut out the ends and splice cans 
together.  I built several probes into the bodies of trashed Neumann 
microphones (we had a pile of those after one client found out the 
hard way that they weren't up to rock-n-roll on the road).

By the way, you don't have to use an EA53 for most things you'll want 
to do -- a 6X5 will work fine.  Note that most HP 11036A probes that 
you find on the market today will need a new EA53, so make sure you 
know where to find one (and budget accordingly) before buying a used probe.
