One photo showed a Channel 9 ID plate (high band VHF - around 190
MHz). But yes, it is clearly apparent from the photos that this is
well-weathered junk with all of the best parts already removed. Even
if they could be returned to proper function (very doubtful in the
condition shown, despite the eBay seller's claim), they are for
salvage only because NTSC broadcasting ends on June 12, 2009.
And yes, the capacitors and transformers in this late '40s design are
filled with PCBs. The seller was smart to find someone else to take
over his headache -- it will cost tens of thousands of dollars in
hazmat disposal fees to recycle the PCB-containing parts (been there,
done that) unless illegal methods are used (and be warned -- if they
are, and the EPA finds out, life as you know it will be over).
BTW, my knowledge of PCB hazmat fees dates to the '80s, so it could
easily be hundreds of thousands of dollars by now.
Deal? Nope -- No Deal.
Best regards,
Don
