Gord,
My XYL comes from an Irish family. I'm told that the tradition to
knock on wood is based on the belief that "the little people" are
always listening to us, and will seize upon anything we say that
inspires them to cause trouble for us. So, we knock on wood which
confuses their hearing and they can't hear what it is we are talking
about. This way, we (hope to) avoid the calamity "they" would hatch
for us.
Maybe touching wood is a tradition based on the true and correct ways
of the Irish! heheh
