My XYL comes from an Irish family.  I'm told that the tradition to  
knock on wood is based on the belief that "the little people" are  
always listening to us, and will seize upon anything we say that  
inspires them to cause trouble for us.  So, we knock on wood which  
confuses their hearing and they can't hear what it is we are talking  
about.  This way, we (hope to) avoid the calamity "they" would hatch  
for us.

Maybe touching wood is a tradition based on the true and correct ways  
of the Irish!  heheh
