The goal was to find a way to get the many R-389s with busted PTOs
back in working condition. The original suggestion was for a
plug-and-play replacement for the 389 PTO, using whatever technology
the designer wanted.

As Roy pointed out (and I have seen a number of times), when the
motor drive crashes a 389 PTO, it's good and mangled. If you can't
find a replacement at a decent price (and it seems R-389 PTOs are
rarely available at any price), and you don't think you have the
skills to salvage the broken one, what can you do? The fact that
it's a 50-turn device (OK, OK, 51-turn) means you won't easily
retrofit any other existing PTO.

Me, I'd rebuild the old one -- and I have done so. But I have a
machine shop, and not everyone does. Building your own 50-turn PTO
from scratch would be just plain crazy, when more modern methods
would be so much easier and in some ways better. Hence the present discussion.

Best regards,

Don
