Reminds me of a story that explains much about the dangers of
"received wisdom":
A scientist put a bunch of apes in a cage, hung a large bunch of
bananas from the top of the cage, and put a ladder under the
bananas. Every time an ape would start up the ladder, a mechanism
would sense weight on the ladder and spray the whole cage with cold
water. Before long, any time an ape even looked like it was heading
for the ladder, all the other apes would gang up and beat the crap
out of it. The scientist then turned the spray mechanism off and
began replacing the apes one by one with apes that had been raised
elsewhere. Each new ape would try to climb the ladder, and would get
mauled by the others until it learned not to do that. Eventually,
none of the apes in the cage had ever been sprayed with cold
water. Still, they ganged up and prevented any of their number from
climbing the ladder, even though they had no idea why the ladder
shouldn't be climbed!
Best regards,
Don
