I have had the same experience. My R-388 was populated with *dogbones*. I took one out, checked it for leakage (none), and value (it was right on). In the interest of science, I dissected it to see how it was made. Looked like film on a ceramic base. In the end, I decided to replace only the electrolytics and enjoy the radio.
