[R-390] what other Collins boatanchor to compliment the R-390A?

The list is pretty-well endless.

 

If you want to go AM / CW, a good choice is the 32V series.

 

If you want to go SSB / CW (you'll need to add mods or the external product
detector to the R-390A first), an S-Line transmitter / power supply will
work great .

 

Or, if you just want to go the CW route, you can do what I've done - R-390A
and Johnson Adventurer with a Heathkit VF-1 VFO.  Twenty-five Watts out on a
really good day!
