Before jumping to conclusions about the condition of the power supply choke 
you should note that the AF chassis also contains the voltage regulator
tubes.

More to the point, it contains the voltage dropping resistors connected to
the 
voltage regulators. Those resistors are firmly bolted (read heat sinked) to 
the AF chassis. I am not surprised that the chassis runs warm.
