All you guys have a point, where there is a rats nest of wires going to just one lug (pot lugs come to mind) that is buried close to the chassis or an apron. There a spiral gizmo covered with heat shrink makes for a nice splice.
Some one pointed out that Collins (or maybe Tek or HP) had a memo that forbade splices.
