I restored an R-390/URR a few years back that was dirty...had seed pods of some sort in it, leaves...dirt and what not....turned out to be one of most beautiful radio's I had ever done.
Don't discount the dirty ones....
I'd go for it, if it had meters and all it's original knobs....an engraved front panel is a plus as well... Their not getting any cheaper!
I would bet it to be gone by the time you get back though...
Cecil

Subject: [R-390] my first Hamfest - found a 390A,not sure what to do about it
I went to my first Hamfest in Orlando today, it opened at 12 and there were already quite a few people milling about
in the tropical heat.
(The first ambulance arrived about 2PM)
My goal was to obtain some spare tubes (done) and some weather sealant for the "N" connectors I recently finished.
(done).
I also wanted to see if I could buy another 390A that I could use for testing and training.
(If I mangle the 390A that Rick M. built for me, it would be "bad")
So I toured the entire thing inside the buildings, and outside in the "RV park" the folks had set up to sell
their wares.
Found one Stewart-Warner 390A, full of dried up leaves and spider webs, original power cord, depot service
record sticker on the side. Cosmos PTO, the cover is off of the filters, and I can tell that at least one has been replaced.
Has all the tubes, no shields, no covers, he says it powers up. $375, no negotiation.
I'm a complete novice at this, should I drive back and take it or wait for another day.
The tube guy told me that I should attend "Dayton" to find more Collins boatanchors than Orlando.
I also saw a 391 for $2500 and a 388 for $1750.
Thanks,
Frank
