Heinz,

That may be the other problem with the 389, not the PTO.

There is a spring loaded bar that goes between the front panel
bandswitch
and a bandswitch on the RF deck. If that went missing when someone
unprepared dropped the front panel, then the switch on the RF deck
doesn't change position.

I have a mechanical drawing made from a good bar, if that's your
problem.

There is also a motorized bandswitch that changes 2-3:1 range coils in
the
low band as you tune through it. You can't tune 14 to 500 KC with one
set
of coils. Hard to screw that up, though.

One of the reasons the PTO gets smashed is the drive motor overcomes the
stops on the PTO because the clutch is too tight. Another is that the
main tuning knob has a detent system that limits the torque the operator
can apply. Replace that knob with one from a 390 and there's no
protection.

What is the common problem with the pto? I have a R-389 and it works
on one band only, have forgotten which one, the lower or higher band.
I never got it on the bench so far. Maybe some day...
