It all makes good sense when thoroughly explained.

The little tid bit about slide rules is ALSO relevant.  We have 
forgotten our dependence upon calculators and computers!  I took all my 
engineering and physics courses by slide rule.  a few years later there 
began the calculator EXPLOSION.  Remember the "Bomar Brain"?  Try to 
deal with scientific notation with something that only adds, subtracts, 
multiplies, or divides.

Then again, I remember a classmate from Japan.  He did what we were 
doing with slide rules on an Abacus!
