On the other end of the spectrum, I can't seem to find a copy of the 
write-up that described the desecration of 2000+ R-390s commonly known 
as the "St. Julian's Creek Massacre".  Based on comments regarding his 
unit that was restored by Chuck Rippel -

written by W4THU, but the document with its heart-breaking pictures of 
receivers piled up and exposed to the elements seems to have disappeared 
from the internet.  However I'm sure there are some here who own radios 
that were salvaged even from this kind of abuse, and to my mind that's a 
great tribute to the quality of the design and construction, especially 
in todays throw-away society.

Back then, they made 'em good enough that they could be restored and 
used, even after being thrown away!
