I seem to remember someone who WAS there telling that the CV-157 came
out after the R-390/URR but before the R-390A/URR. It was used in a
diversity setup with two R-390/URR radios.

I would guess that use of multi-channel, independent sideband RTTY
broadcasts came after the R-390A was in use and available.
The R-1051 and that monster National receiver with two cabinets
joined above one another were designed with the needed stability
built in.
Also, Nike missile sites were equipped with transmitters (and
presumably receivers) fed from a then state of the art master
oscillator, known as The Sulzer frequency standard. I'd guess that
the Nike sites were silent, and maybe the central control stations
were also, and they needed the transmitters and receivers to come up
ON frequency, without doubt or any pre-broadcast frequency checks or
tune-up periods.
