Fellows,
The site is likely part of a larger base.
The site is fenced to restrict entry. Just being in service did not get you a
need
to get in to the site. As the site is likely a transmitter receiver site, The
RTTY and voice could be any where and coupled to the site via phone lines. No
need for guards at the site as the site is part of a larger base. The door is
likely locked and just one or two MP's had a desk inside. You ring the door
bell and were or were not granted entry. Likely the site was manned 24 x 7 by a
couple maintenance men and an MP or two. You worked a rotating trick of 6
days on and 2 off. doing day, swing and mid tricks. All the operators were
likely some where else with the crypto, RTTY, and voice operations. The two
locations were connected by direct dedicated phone wire circuits.
Plowed fields around antenna sites is still common practice. There was no
reason to pay rent on that much space for no return. The owners are allowed to
raise crops.
The Military promises not to trample the crops doing maintenance.
The Owner promises not sell the antenna for scrap and not to plant climbing
vines that
would impair RF performance. It also helps if the farmer adds some water to
the soil from time to time in dry weather.
The only site I served at where the field was not plowed was at Phu Bia.
There was so much ordnance in the field from where the ammo dump next door when up
one time the antenna men walked very narrow paths and often went out with
metal detectors to avoid stepping on any thing.
Still no clues as to the location of the site.
