I've experienced the same thing - intermittent 60Hz hum that greatly
reduces sensitivity but makes loud buzzing noises. In my case it was
a 5814A (actually a modernish "JJ"-brand 12AU7) with an intermittent
heater-cathode short and I could induce it or make it go away
by tapping on the tube. It was in the IF deck.
